    Background to the program and subject area:

   

The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, established as part of the College of Rehabilitative Sciences in 2003, is among the first university departments in Jordan to offer Bachelor degree in hearing and Speech Sciences and Master’s degree in speech-language therapy. Our department is among the first on the country level to offer this specialty and our master’s program is the only graduate program at the country and the regional level. The program is designed to provide the students with essential academic knowledge, clinical skills, and reflective practices that enable them compete in the professions of speech pathology and audiology. Upon leaving the University our graduates enter the clinical, teaching, and research fields competently.

 
Vision statements of the program:

Diverse theoretical and clinical opportunities to learn about different communicative disorders are offered by highly qualified PhD and master degree holders who are with wide variety of specialization. The hearing courses and clinics, introduce students to diagnostic and rehabilitative services to children and adults.  The Speech-Language courses and clinics offer experiences related to speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders at all ages. 

 
Mission statements of the program:

   

The department of Speech and Hearing Sciences seeks to provide its students with the highest level of education and practicum in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. It targets qualifying students with adequate professional experiences and skills to provide children and adults, with wide range of communication disorders, with assessment, diagnosis, and intervention services among different sites including the university clinic, schools, centers for children with disabilities, and private clinics.

 
 
Program Aims:

 The department aims at:

1. Providing course work and clinical experiences reflecting pertinent and current content necessary for personal growth and professional competence in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.

2. Developing fundamental understanding of hearing, speech and language development and disorders across the life span.

3. Emphasizing the role and responsibilities of the speech-language pathologist and audiologist.

4. Graduating professionals that value and foster communication and interaction with colleagues for the benefit of optimal service to clients with communication disorders.

5. Involving students in research activities and encouraging application of research evidence into everyday clinical practice.

6. Developing professional and educational collaboration with international institutions through study and research exchange of faculty and students.

​       Upon completing the program, students will be able to:

 
1.    Demonstrate deep knowledge of the basic human communication processes, as well as the nature of speech, language, and hearing.
2.    Identify and apply the basic principles and methods of prevention, assessment and intervention for individuals with communication and hearing disorders.
3.    Apply the basic clinical skills in working with individuals with communication and hearing disorders.
4.    Fformulate specific and appropriate intervention plans.
5.    Conduct appropriate diagnostic monitoring procedures, therapy or other actions safely and skillfully.
6.    Write professional reports for patient with communication and hearing disorders.
7.    Apply principles of evidence-based practice in the assessment and intervention processes.
8.    Identify ongoing effectiveness of planned activity and modify it accordingly.
9.    Analyze the criteria of each assessment and intervention approach and accordingly choose the best technique for each individual case.

Background to the program and subject area:
The program of Occupational Therapy (OT) is a 4years program that meets the national and international standards. The program was established in 1999 as a continuation to the diploma program in
occupational therapy in the Royal medical services (1989-1997). It is the second bachelor program to be established in the Arab World after Beit Lahm University in Palestine (1997). The subject areas of the program are comprehensive and includes: Occupational therapy for pediatric, Neurology, physical dysfunction, psychiatry, hand injuries, and splinting. Many foundational courses to the field are needed such as: Theories and approaches in OT, Fundamentals of OT, group therapy, strategies of independence, development through the lifespan, and therapeutic techniques are covered in the program.
 
Vision statements of the program: 
To be locally and internationally recognized as the preferred program for exemplary occupational therapy education, research, and community integration.
 
 
Mission statements of the program: 
   To prepare graduates who are competent, creative, skilled, and ethical occupational therapy leaders who meet the local and regional employment needs through engaging in experiential learning that focuses on occupation based practice, evidence based practice and community integration.
 
   
Program Aims:

1. Equip the student with the practical and clinical skills in a variety of occupational therapy practice scenarios and settings.

2. Develop the students’ appreciation of evidence based practice within the occupational therapy arena, so that they are able to critically reflect upon, evaluate and make decisions within practice.

3. Promote the students’ capacity for and commitment to lifelong learning and maximise opportunities for continuing professional development. 

4. Provide students with confidence in their professional identity to be able to transfer the core values and skills of occupational therapy to clients, policy makers and the community

 Upon completing the program, students will be able to:

 1.   Use knowledge in occupational therapy philosophy, theories, models, approaches, and frameworks in the practice of occupational therapy.
 2.   Apply the therapeutic use of occupation for individuals of different age groups and communities, within contemporary and future settings such as hospitals, schools, and homes etc, and with different diagnoses (such as paediatrics, neurological, physical, and psychiatry)
 3.   Assess and evaluate individual and environmental barriers to occupational performance, using a variety of formal, informal, standardised and non-standardised assessment tools and methods
 4.   Develop treatment plans collaboratively with clients, demonstrating application of best evidence, effective use of resources and client-centred practice.
 5.   Implement, identify and critically evaluate interventions.
 6.   Document, evaluation results and progress using a variety of methods (including accurate evaluation forms/progress notes/discharge records), demonstrating the ability to adapt communication styles to meet different needs of practice
 7.   Demonstrate an understanding of service management principles and the government, economic, social and political issues that affect clinical practice.
 8.   Respect the rights, culture, dignity, confidentiality and individuality of clients and their families expected by the profession and realize the importance of client-centred practice with people from diverse backgrounds and advocate as a professional for the occupational therapy services offered and for the recipients of those services.
 9.   Develop problem solving strategies, clinical reasoning and critical reflection on practical scenarios, and synthesise knowledge through evaluation
 10. Reflect skilful communication, leadership, time management, lifelong learning, using appropriate communication technologies and scientific research, work within a team , has the ability to think critically and solve problems.

The fieldwork training is consisting of four courses. Each one of them is 3 credit hours with a total of 900 actual hours - Students are expected to finish this training by the last year (4 th year)   

Pediatric clinical

The students will be introduced to different pediatric occupational therapy settings. Fieldwork visits will introduce the students to team members involved in Pediatric Rehabilitation, materials and tools used and environmental configuration of pediatric setting

Physical clinical

In this fieldwork training, the students visit several hospitals and clinics for neurological and physical dysfunctions to apply the OT assessment and intervention methods learnt in previous courses



Psychiatric clinical

In this fieldwork training, the students visit a psychiatric, geriatric and addition clinical settings to apply the OT assessment and intervention methods learnt in previous courses.

Neurology clinical

In this fieldwork training, the students visit several hospitals and clinics for neurological and physical dysfunctions to apply the OT assessment and intervention methods learnt in previous courses.

The applied practical training is consisting of 6 courses with a total of 420 actual hours.
